Tom

Who is Tom?

Hello! I’m Tom. I’m a farmer in Frettecuisse, a tiny village in the Somme, in the north of France. I’m the one talking to you on every page of Sainos. Come on, let me tell you my story!

Tom’s house and barn by the road

My house, my farm

This is my red-brick house, by the little country road. Right next to it is my old barn where I keep my tools, and at the back, Pilou’s kennel. Frettecuisse is a few houses, fields as far as the eye can see… and lots of wind! Everybody knows everybody here: when my tomatoes are ripe, I give some to my neighbours, and they give me honey or jam.

When I was little

I grew up on this farm with my grandparents. Granny gave me my very own vegetable patch when I was 6. I sowed radishes… and went to watch them grow every morning before school! My first radishes were all crooked, but I thought they were delicious.

My day on the farm

Every season I have a different job. Here’s what I do through the year:

  • In springI sow seeds and plant the little seedlings in the vegetable garden.
  • In summerI pick tomatoes, courgettes and strawberries… and I water a lot!
  • In autumnI pick apples and pears in the orchard and bring in the pumpkins.
  • In winterI prune the fruit trees and get the seeds ready for spring.

Pilou, my dog

Pilou is a big golden dog with soft fur and a tail that never stops wagging. He follows me everywhere: into the orchard, onto the tractor, right up to the henhouse door. His favourite job? Chasing away the crows that peck at my seedlings!

My hens

I have nine hens: Cocotte, Paulette, Biscotte, Praline, Noisette, Plume, Grenade, Caramel and Madame Rose, the boss of the gang. Every morning I collect their eggs, still warm. They eat the peelings from the vegetable garden and, in return, give me great fertiliser!

My farm

My farm has three corners. Come and visit!

My biggest blunder

One day I planted mint straight into the soil of my vegetable garden. Big mistake! In one summer it took over everything, even under the strawberries. Since then my mint always grows in a pot. You remember that too!
